I need help understanding my recurrent miscarriages. I had a totally uneventful pregnancy (age 33) with my first child who is now 2 years old. I got pregnant on the first try with my second pregnancy (age 34) and saw a healthy heartbeat by ultrasound at 7 weeks. At a second ultrasound at 9 weeks it was discovered the baby had died unexplicably. Nothing could be seen on the ultrasound and my uterus was measuring 4-5 weeks. I had a D&C and tissue samples did not turn up anything unusual. I got pregnant again on the first try 1.5 months later and saw a healthy heartbeat by ultrasound at 7 weeks. At a subsequent ultrasound at 11 weeks, it was discovered the baby had died and was measuring 8.5 weeks. I had another D&C. I'm told it is extremely unusual for this to happen after seeing 2 healthy heartbeats at 7 weeks. I'm now 35. Also, I did not smoke or drink alcohol during any pregnancy and am not exposed to any toxic chemicals. I would like advice on which tests I should undergo and if they are likely to yeild results. Also, what are my chances of this happening again?

I am very sorry to hear about your loss. Some good news is that my sister had the same thing happen at 8 weeks and 10 weeks. She had a very normal healthy pregancy the first time and had a Girl, 4 years later she got pregant, and lost it at 10 weeks. After she got pregnant the third, time they did blood tests every 6 days, It was discovered that her progesterone levels went very low after the 7th week and that was when the baby died a week later. She was put on progesterone for the fourth pregnancy, A healthy baby was born 12 months after they discovered and corrected the problem.

Good Luck

Thanks for your reply. It's terrible she had to suffer 3 miscarriages before figuring it out. I'll ask my doctor about this and see if it could help in my next try. I can't stand the thought of losing another.

Many women use progesterone vaginal suppositories with great success. I don't understand why the med. community makes you wait for so many losses before they use this option.

I just had my 2nd miscarriage in 6 months last night. My dr. tested my progesterone @ 5 weeks and I was at a 30, also my HCG increased by 1.5 times in 2 days at the same time. Thursday, I began to spot-7.5 weeks. Friday, I went in for a sono and there was a heart beat @160. My dr. thought everything looked good. I then started bleeding later that day and it increased throughout the weekend with major cramping, until I miscarried on Sunday. I am 34 years old and wonder what you think. Any input that will help me when talking to my dr. would be appreciated. I am devastated and scared that I will never be able to have a baby. I feel I am being punished and like there is something wrong with me. My dr. did say that my gestational sac was 1 week behind my fetus. ALthough my progesterone was 30 @ 5 weeks, I wondered if it went down later in my pregnancy because my pregnancy symptpms decreased . I really appreciate being able to communicate with someone that has experienced thesame thing. Thank you and hang in there.

Honestly I'm getting so much conflicting info, I'm confused myself. I know it's very rare to have a miscarriage after seeing the heartbeat by ultrasound. Some people are telling me it's a progestrone problem, some are saying it could be an HcG problem, and some are saying I need a complete immune analysis, which consists of the following tests.

Leukocyte antibody detection/blocking antibodies.
* Antiphospholipid antibody panel (7 epitopes, 3 isotypes).
* Antinuclear antibody panel.
* Immunophenotype for NK cell number.
* NK/IVIg assay for NK cell activity.

I have no idea what these tests are, but after they tell me the results from the chromosomal analysis (they sent tissue from my D&C), I plan to ask for these tests too. If something turns up with the immune tests, it can be treated with low dose (baby) asprin, and heparin injections. I guess there are also some steroids that are prescribed - hope I don't have to take them.

I am so frustrated by all of this, I just can't stand it. To make matters worse, my dad is an OBGYN and also has no idea what to tell me!! My first pregnancy was totally uneventful so I just can't understand what happened between then and now that made me unable to carry a baby. I really hope you figure out what's going on with you too. If you find any other info, let me know. I'm hoping someone comes up with the answer so I don't have to go through this again. It really is draining, awful and just plain sad. Good luck
