We finally got "the call" two days ago! Our baby is due Feb. 7th but we are pretty sure that he/she will be showing up sooner. I am currently at 18 ounces a day. I started the night time pump last night and I am still on the regular Domp. 20mg 4x daily along with Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek. Is there anything else anyone recommends? I am pumping 9 times a day. Please advise with any suggestions. THANKS!!

Hi Sandra,

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! This is a very exciting time for you. You're doing very well and once your baby is at your breast, your milk supply should build and build.

It's a very good idea to contact a board certified lactation consultant to help you get breastfeeding off to a good start. You can find one here www.iblce.org Just click on the "About IBLCE" button and the US and International registry pops up.

It would be a good idea to have a lactation aid available such as a Lact-aid www.lact-aid.com in case your baby needs topping up after the first couple of days. When you first feed, your baby will not need more than about 1/2 oz per feeding so please pump after feeds to keep your milk supply going. After a day or so, your infant's needs will likely increase. Supplementation if necessary is best done at the breast with your milk that you've stored. This will help to further increase your milk supply while keeping baby at the breast.

Most importantly, this is a time to enjoy your baby! Please keep us all posted. Looking forward to hearing all about your first days as a family.

Best,

Lenore,
Thank you so much for the reply. How long do you think I will need to pump for after breastfeeding the baby. About a week?

It's impossible to predict how long you would need to pump. You're already doing very well at 18 oz per day and your supply should build once baby is at the breast. You're baby will eventually need about 25 oz (could be more, could be less) per 24 hours. If you supplement at the breast with a supplementary feeding tube device such as a Lact-aid www.lact-aid.com, filled with your previously pumped milk, this will further help to build your milk supply while helping to keep baby at the breast learning to breastfeed.
