Hi, Karie-
I haven't been on the site in a while...busy being a mommy I suppose. Anyway, I wanted to catch up with you and compare notes. Our babies were born within a few weeks of each other. Bretton was born 10.03.05. I noticed that you said in a recent post that you had HAD a successful breastfeeding experience with your second adoption. Does that mean that you have already weaned? How did that go? Bretton is 9 mos. and a few days and I am wondering what we should do. His top two teeth are coming in (I can feel them when he nurses) and he already has his bottom teeth. I MIGHT produce 1 to 2 ozs atleast once a day (probably the morning feeding) and then only up to 1 oz for 4 other feedings. I nurse anywhere from 4 to 6 times a day. He nurses well and likes it usually but sometimes he would just rather sit up and play or go crawl or something else fun. I know that I am mostly nursing for my benefit at this point. If I were to give him a bottle with formula rather than nurse he would be just fine with that. However, he does prefer breastmilk over formula. We can have a bottle of both and he chooses breastmilk. My sister just had a baby and she wants to start pumping for us in the next few days, though so that will be wonderful. What would you do? I am torn. I said that I would nurse him as long as he wanted to (thinking that that might be even a couple of years) but now it takes more effort than it is sometimes worth...or does it?!?!

Thanks for the encouragement J! He is seriously teething right now...loose stool and all! He has been uncomfortable since yesterday afternoon and hasn't eaten much or had much to drink at all. I am concerned. I will continue to bf as much as he'll let me, though.

Hi Kalli,

This is all typical of your baby's stage of development at this time. Just keep offering the breast and he should settle down. Some mothers mistakenly think their baby is ready to wean when it's a teething issue or some other thing. Babies, if left to their own devices will typically not really self-wean until over 2 years of age.

Hmmmm, That is very interesting! I did not know that they would want to nurse that long...I am glad to hear it, though and will do my part to help facilitate!
