Hi everybody, I have another question. Cathy posted to me the side effects of the protocol. Does anyone know how common blood clots are with the protocol? I assume that is caused from the birth control pills. Is that true with all birth control pills and are there pre-cursors that increase that risk? Cathy you said your BP went up quite a bit with diastolic staying the same and your weight did as well. Is it the Yasmin that causes both side effects? I am already overweight-YIKES-. I guess I should have dealt with the weight thing before I started. But I am only about five and a half months from delivery. Do you loose the weight you gain after you start nursing or after weaning? I thought you said after weaning Cathy? Well, thanks for all of your input. I am still working on starting the protocol. Becky,
Aside from the Diane 35 bcp, which Lenore and Dr. Newman no longer recommend (because of a 4 fold higher increase in DVT's with this particular form of progesterone ),,,your chances of a DVT with the bcp are much less than with a pregnancy. I can't remember the exact stat'sI had read in the past, but it was something like 4 DVT's per thousand on the bcp vs. 12 DVT's per 1000 pregnant women. I would just make sure to take a baby aspirin every day and check your blood pressure weekly. My top number or systolic went up, and my diastolic also,,,but it is not high enough to go on any meds at this point, plus I will be off the protocol in about 3 weeks it will be 7 months..
I gained 45 so far in 6 months. I was very small to begin with so at least that helped. I plan on going back on the Atkins after our daughter to be (who will hopefully be born later this month or early May in Guatemala) is weaned. Also, many women do lose weight while pumping and nursing. I have heard mixed things from 500 calories burned a day to 800 calories burned a day while nursing.
The hormones required to make milk are no where near what they are for IVF tx's, pregnancy etc....but everyone needs to make an informed decision and Lenore rec. everyone is followed by a MD. I gave copies of the protocol to my GYN doc and she seemed interested but would not write me any of the scripts I needed, so I had to go on-line a nd get them from New Zealand. Let us know how you do when you get started. Any more questions let us know...take care, Cathy

Have you heard? Dr. Atkins passed away yesterday. He slipped on an icey sidewalked and cracked his head. He lingered in a coma for 9 days. Then passed away yesterday. This is so sad. He was a great doctor

Yes, I was very sad to hear that. He has helped alot of people, esp. diabetics and patients with heart disease.. I was hoping to finally be able to go on the Atkins cruise next year.
The Atkins people e-mailed me directly about him getting the head injury, I felt that I knew him personally from all the newsletters I used to get from the Atkins Center in New York.
I hope that someone at the Center carries on with his work.
Take care,
Cathy

Hi Rebecca Sue!

I just started the protocol 5 days ago - I am taking Necon 1/35 since i have not even been approved yet for adoption - I have no clue what my lead time will be - could be a month could be 7 months.. I have also been on 10mg dom 4x a day as recommended for the first week of the protocol. So far, my side effects have been non-existent save for the breast swelling around day 4.

I have a poster on my fridge and pantry doors that say "NO 25!" I am also removing starchy carbohydrates from my diet (still getting carbs through veggies and fruit) and hoping that I can minimize the weight gain.

I also tell myself every morning that I WILL NOT give in to the side effects (fatigue and cravings mostly) - I believe that a lot of these can be overcome with positive visualization, praying and strong mental will - I sound like a hippy - an d I'm not - but these are things that I can control - and I am not afraid to ask for the most: a FULL milk supply with minimal side effects and a healthy baby!!

Good luck with everything and your beautiful twins!!
