Our son came home on Thursday last week. I immediately introduced him to the breast which he had a hard time taking at first. With a little persistence, he finally latched on really well. Since then I am not using the supplementer anymore as I can feel the milk there and don't feel that it is needed. He seems to be getting plenty when he nurses. But, when I pump I am only getting and very tiny bit... is this normal? I know he's getting more. I have tried pumping only one breast at a time so that I can massage the breast at the same time and still only getting a tiny bit. Any suggestions? I am using a Lactina pump... so, it can't be that the pump is not up to the job!

I actually had better luck pumping with the Medela Pump in Style than the Lactina. It is also difficult getting used to giving milk to the pump. If he is nursing fine and having plenty of wet and poopy diapers then I would not worry about pumping after feeds. Just nurse him often. If you need to pump for storage maybe try pumping the one side while he is nursing on the other.

Thanks Laurie. I am still supplementing a little bit, but today he nursed all but two feedings which he nursed first and then had some formula. I think before long I'll be nursing him exclusively and not need the pump anyway. Thanks.

Wonderful it sounds like things are going really well.
