Hello.

Our newborn baby is due through adoption in 2.5 weeks. We will be in a different State for 7 to 10 days until we can return home with our baby.

I am pumping 2.5 ounces a day right now. I started pumping 4 weeks ago and was at less than an ounce a day then.

Should I purchase an SNS or Lact-Aid ahead of time and bring it with me? Will I definitely need one? Can I wait until we return home? How will I feed the baby there if I am only producing 3 to 4 ounces a day? What should I do? What did you do? Please advise.

I'd buy a lactaid and take it with you. When you first nurse the baby, don't use it. You need to figure out what you're doing with nursing. Especially don't nurse it if the mom let's you nurse the first day since the baby will take in very little milk anyway. Once you figure out the nursing thing then add in the supplementer. I found it useful to tape the tube in place until I knew what I was doing (I was still nursing my bioson when my daughter was born so I knew how to nurse a baby.) Once I figured out the supplementer I stopped the tape since it was eating up my skin.

After my bioson was born I could never pump more than 2 ounces at a time, yet he got plenty. So, getting 3 to 4 ounces a day now is no indication of what you'll get once your baby is here. I worked with a LC that would weigh my daughter before and after nursing on an electronic scale to see if she was getting enough milk. She was about a week old and she wasn't so I started using the supplementer then.

I would bring the lactaid with you for sure. That way, you will never have to resort to bottles, if she takes to nursing.

I never used tape, I just stuck the tube in through the corner of her mouth once she was latched on. Once the suction kicked in I would move it more to the middle or her mouth and it stayed in place. That worked well for us. Dont give up though, as it does take some getting used to.
