Hello everyone!

My husband and I are almost done with our home study, we've completed our interviews and our social worker is now writing our report. It will be complete the end of March or early April, then we'll be ready to be matched. We are pursuing a domestic infant adoption. I breastfed my now 3 yr 4 month old daughter for 2 years and I'm hoping that my body will remember what to do with a little help. I have a Mirena IUD (that's been in place for 3 years) and am planning to take Orth 1/35 and Dom to start (per Lenore and Dr. Newman's recommendation), proceeding with the regular protocol, unless we are matched quickly, then I'll transition to the accelerated protocol. Does anyone have experience doing the protocol with a Mirena IUD in place? I'm just curious to hear from someone who has been there done that or is there...

I don't have personal experience with this situation, but based on what I know about levonorgestrel (the hormone Mirena secretes) you shouldn't have any trouble. It's considered compatible with breastfeeding, and although it does pass through breast milk to the nursling, it's not considered harmful. It also has no noted effect on quantity of breast milk, according to drugs.com.

I also had the Mirena in place before starting the protocol so I just recently e-mailed Lenore to ask her about it. She recommended that I remove the Mirena before beginning the protocol. She said: "If you do need birth control we suggest a barrier method such as a condom or diaphragm while on our protocols."

Based on her recommendation I went ahead and got the Mirena removed and started the Ortho 1/35 and the Dom that same day. So far so good! We are hoping to adopt in June!

Thanks to you both! I've also emailed with Lenore and she recommended removing it, but it's not only for bc purposes that I have it. Without some form of hormonal bc, I have terribly heavy/painful menses and just can't "go there" while trying to induce lactation and be a new mommy to an infant (some day!) and my toddler.

We got a call this week to potentially be shown to a mom, we scrambled to finish our stuff and send it off, but haven't heard yet....eeek!

While on the bcp protocol I didn't get a period (you take constant active pills). Then I got it one time when I went off the bcp's and started pumping. Since then I haven't had it again. I've been bf for 19 months.
Last time I didn't get it until I stopped bf and stopped the domperidone and I think that is pretty typical.
