Hi everyone~
It's been awhile - but I wanted to let everyone know that we brought Lucas Conner home on August 12th and I was able to breastfeed for an entire week by using my frozen milk as a supplement. Unfortunately, I developed a serious pain in my breasts that would begin immediatley after breastfeeding or pumping. I looked it up in
The Ultimate Book of Breastfeeding and I self diagnosed my pain as Reynaud's phenomenon. The following week, I went to the doctor - and he had never heard of Reynaud's in the nipple but was willing to prescribe the 2% nitroglycerine ointment as a possible remedy. IT WORKED!! I felt immediate relief after applying the cream that night! I also saw an increase in my milk production (about 10 oz. a day) I am now only using the cream whenever my nipples blanch and the pain returns - unfortunately, during the time that I was under so much pain - I stopped breastfeeding and resorted to only pumping - giving baby breastmilk 2x a day (4 oz.) and supplementing with formula.
I just couldn't bear the agony of the pain, watching my new son push me away AND knowing that feeding will last 45 minutes - between BF each breast then supplementing with a Lact-Aid. I was starting to resent the baby for making me hurt so bad Now that the pain has almost gone away, I am breastfeeding once a day - in the afternoon, when baby is not as hungry and I am calm because I know that I can give him a bottle if he gets too hungry.
i hope you guys don't think I failed - BUT i really do believe that by giving my baby 8 oz. of breastmilk a day regardless of breast or bottle is the important thing. Not to mention - now hubby gets to help a lot more and feeding is so much faster.
I had hoped to bring in a full supply - But I am glad and proud of what I'm making now - My GYN is AMAZED as I am his first ever patient to induce lactation and my hubby is proud of me - now I just have to get over that i am not 100% breastfeeding my baby and giving him 100% breastmilk - but what can i say... I was on the protocol for 105 days and pumped 3 weeks before bringing him home (he was 2 weeks old when I first was able to put him on the breast)... I think I'm doing okay
