I started getting heartburn at about 40mg when I was weaning. I thought I weaned really slow but after seeing the instructions on this website tonight I realized that I went too fast. I'm down to 20mg. a day and I have raging heartburn. I'm confused as to what to do??? Do I go back up on my dom and try to wean down again? OR Do I just suffer through the heartburn and hope that my body adjusts soon? <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" />

Dear Sarah,

Please go back to 10 mg 4 times per day and sit there for at least a week. That should calm things down. Let me know how you feel at 10 mg 4 times per day and then I'll give you further instructions.

Warmest regards,

Thank you Lenore! I went back up to 40mg yesterday and I already feel better. Phew! I'm on my way to Ukraine on March 8th to pick up my babies and I'm glad I won't have to deal with that heartburn. I will stay on the 40mg until I get back to the US and then I want to wean per your instructions.

Ok, I've now been on 40mg of dom for a month and the heartburn is gone. However, I'm still having GI effects were I feel nauseas. I've been to my docs several times and have had tons of lab work including ultrasound. The doc is convinced my issues all have to do with coming off the dom and my body trying to regulate. I'm ready to get off this stuff!!!!!! I have always dealt with Irritable Bowel syndrome so I know I'm not going to have a great time getting off just because it's a change for my body.

While on the dom I felt so relaxed, sleepy and almost sedated. I'm assuming that maybe because my prolactin levels were so high. But, since trying to wean I've been uptight and anxious. I just want my body to regulate back to who I was before the dom!

Lenore, do you think I can take another 10mg away per day and stay there for a month? Honestly, if I didn't think I would have any major problems I would stop taking it all today!! I'm trying to be patient..... <img src="http://www.asklenore.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/crazy.gif" alt="" />

Hi Sarah,

I'm so sorry you're not feeling well.

It's highly unlikely that the domperidone is making you feel nauseous. Domperidone was originally designed to assist people with nausea and upper gastro-intestinal problems. Now oxytocin is another story. Did you notice if you get nauseous while breastfeeding? Some women experience nausea during let down.

In any case, you can certainly reduce your domperidone to 10 mg 3 times per day and see how you feel.

Fondly,

Thank you Lenore for your response. My docs didn't think it was the dom that was making me have nausea. They thought it was the fact that I was coming off of it. Sort of like withdrawal effects. On the dom the only problem I had was that I was gaining tons of weight and I was really sleepy and sluggish all day. I decided to come off of it because I wasn't making enough milk to really continue exposing myself to it. But, weaning has been very difficult. I have felt very ill since coming down half of my dosing per day. I've been on 40mg for a month and my body just doesn't seem to be regulating itself.

I'm not breastfeeding as of yet because my 16mth old twins just got home two weeks ago. They are still getting used to being held, cuddled etc. and won't take to the breast as of yet. But, I don't remember feeling nauseas when I pumped or hand expressed before they arrived.
