Hello Lenore and Team!

Well, finally I'm back to give you the good news that our son was born on March 9 at 7:13 PM, 9 pounds, 3 ounces. Our GS did a terrific job. I was able to put him to breast for an hour after birth (after the 10 minute mini exam the hospital insisted on). He latched a bit but mostly slept.

I could go on for pages with all the details, but I don't have the energy right now, so let me cut to the chase. I'm only producing one ounce a day (today was 1.25!). I have about two ounces of Rebecca's milk left (my friend that wanted to give my 3-4 months worth of milk but only could give 2 weeks because she ran low when she went back to work). I've been in tears a lot because he has been so constipated from the formula ... I feel like a failure. Then, last night my husband was so sweet and encouraged me to go to quilt group, where my cousin offered to induce for me when she heard how little I was producing. So Lenore, please, what should she do ... just start pumping and go on Dom 20 mg x 4 plus herbs and oatmeal? She said she produced like a "cow" for her own three bio childtren. She is 38 and he youngest is 11.

Today I looked into a milk bank and it is so expensive. If anyone has any extra, I would be very grateful.

By the way, the blue ice worked fine ... I also froze 32 oz Gatorade and water bottles (after a sip from the top) which I used to fill up the cooler and drink in the motel ... we waited for 12 days so we were sure not to miss the birth.

The pasturization tips would be very helpful. In another post, I'd be happy to share all I've been doing, I just need to cut this post soon to get some rest.

Anyhow, this website has been a source of strength for me ... thank you Lenore and Team, and Henry III thanks you too!

Hey Christina,

CONGRATULATIONS!!! This is wonderful news!

Your milk supply will grow with your baby at the breast. Please use the Lact-aid filled with either donor milk or formula to help to build your own milk supply. Pumping for about 10 min after feeds is also a big help.

When you say your baby is constipated, do you mean that he's not pooping or do you mean that his poop is hard, like pellets? Not pooping at all is a sign that baby is not getting enough to eat rather than a sign of constipation. Newborns do not tend to become constipated. If your baby is passing pellets instead of loose stools, that's another matter and you'll want to discuss the idea of changing formula with your baby's doctor.

If your cousin wishes to induce a breastmilk supply to help you, the accelerated protocol would be her best bet to get her milk supply in fast. The guide to the induced lactation protocols may be found here

Please let your cousin know that she can contact me directly if she has questions or concerns about the protocols and to be sure to speak with her doctor first.

In the meantime, contact Nona Davis to see if she has any donors. The pasteurization procedure is definitely worth the time it takes. I usually process 200 ounces at a time. Please email me at lenore@asklenore.info for details on how to do this.

Fondly,

Dear Lenore,

Tonight I am going to try the LactAid. I have been using the SNS with my fingers mostly, and can occasionally get the baby to take the breast without the SNS, but not with. I was successful with him taking the breast with the LactAid with the help of the lactation consultant, but was not up to learning the LactAid until tonight.

The baby's poop has been hard, like pellets, and he's had to push hard and appeared in pain. The doctor told me to give him one ounce apple juice dilluted with once ounce water and to use a glycerin suppository. She did not mention changing formulas.

I had a hunch you would recommend my cousin go on the accelerated protocol to induce ... so do you think she could do just one month of the Yasmin, instead of two? Also, what pump do you recommed? I'm pretty sure you will say the Pump in Style. Do you think the 2004 Advanced Model is best? I am still using the Ameda and find it makes me sore. Do you think I would be better off with the Pump in Style as well?

Thanks for you offer of support to my cousin.

Aloha,
Christina
