Hi Tamara,
Welcome to the Ask Lenore message boards!! We're all here ready to help.
I do have a concern about goat's milk. A pediatrician friend of mine mentioned to me that the use of goat's milk worries her very much. You did mention that your child is older but I have to let everyone know that goat's milk for a newborn can cause a serious and severe anemia. Raw goat's milk, that is is not pasturized, may contain bacteria or parasites that could be fatal to an infant. So please, everyone out there who is considering this option, I just wanted to pass on this information and encourage you to pasteurize the goat's milk if you're considering this option and be sure to add supplementary iron to your child's diet.
We're very fortunate to have on our site Nona Davis who runs the mother to mother milk donation program. I've been able to supplement my enormous son Ethan with the help of a wonderful donor that Nona found for me. This donor has been helping use since February. The milk is free, all I pay for is the cooler, ice packs, milk storage bags and shipping. For those of you who are concerned about the use of donor milk, you can pasteurize it which removes HIV, CMV, TB, Hep A, B, C and other nasties while maintaining most of the nutritive and immunological benefits.
Anyone who is interested in the pasteurization process can email me at
lenore@asklenore.info and I'll be happy to email you the instructions.
Obviously the best milk for your baby is your own so your decision to do the protocols and bring in your milk supply is a wise one. The longer you can do the protocol before your baby arrives, the more milk you will have. The added advantage to bringing in your milk supply besides reduction in "milk chores" (I hear ya) is that your body makes antibodies to your environment. This is the best protection you can give your baby against environmental pathogens and other yucky things while fostering a close and affectionate bond between you.
Again, welcome to the message boards and thank you for posting.
Fondly,
