I am on the regular protocol, with no baby in sight. If I get notice, I'll just follow through. If I get no notice, I'll just stop and start herbs & pumping. If it all happens really soon, I'll just supplement.

I figure that if I am on the regular protocol only 1-2 months, that is basically just accelerated protocol, yes? But the accelerated protocol doesnt' give a full supply, maybe? I wonder how long it takes on the regular protocol to be able to get a full supply? I know the longer the better, but at what point can I assume I'll be able to produce all the milk the baby needs? (after how long on the protocol?)

Does that make sense? I'm not sure it does... crazy

J I wish there was a simple answer to give you. It seems that everyone responds differently. Some women achieve a full supply while on the accelerated protocol while others do the full protocol for months and do not. Although many do. There is not really a way to tell before hand how you will do. That is why we always suggest following it exactly.

If you don't have time to pump do not fret often women don't and getting baby to breast is the best way to bring in milk. Make sure you have a lact-aid or other supplemental nurser so that if you need to supplement you can do it at the breast.

Thanks. I'll just do the best I can. I guess that's the best anyone can do, though, right? I always like to know when I can stop worrying about things, LOL!

So now, about that lact-aid... I guess I would certainly need it if I had no notice. I *might* need it if I had notice, but perhaps I would figure that out in the first week or two of pumping?

Should I just wait until I know I need it to order one? Would I have trouble switching the baby from a bottle to nursing with the lact-aid? I know with my bio daughter, I was adamant that no one was going to give her a bottle until she was a thoroughly experienced nurser, LOL!

Or do I go ahead and get one, just in case? What if I don't need it? Would I be able to sell a new, unused one? Or maybe there is someone else who bought one just in case, who would like to sell me hers? Or maybe my LLL leader has one I could borrow until mine came in? Oh, the logistics!

Thanks!

I would go ahead and get one. Yes you can absolutely sell a used or unused one and usually here in the Buy Sell Trade forum they go pretty fast. You shouldn't have trouble switching baby from bottle to breast. It is suggested that baby be on Avent bottles if they have to take a bottle because those nipples are more breastfeeding friendly.

I was in your situation. I was on the protocol for 8 months while waiting. If we had been matched, I would have started pumping 4-6 weeks before the baby was due. We ended up being matched in a last minute placement. So the baby was already born the day we got the call. I did buy a used lactaid to have on hand. I did not end up using it because I found it difficult to use so we just bottle fed for the firt week, while I built a supply. My supply came fast, but that doesn't happen with everyone. I would suggest having the lactaid or the SNS just in case, because you may not have time to borrow one.
Also, I would not recommend Avent bottles because they have BPA. I would recommend the Born Free bottles that are BPA free. The nipple was easy enough for baby to switch back and for with.

Jennifer where do you get the Born Free? I didn't know about the BPA issue with Avent. Are the nipples similar?

Good advice. Thank you. Off to get 1 lact-aid, 2 bottles, and 1 can of formula -- just in case! laugh

Babies R us carries Born Free now. The nipples are similar to Avent I would say and they have a "vent" like Dr. Brown's. Avent and Dr. Browns both have BPA (although they may now be working to change that since all the info came out about BPA).

I hate to say it depends on the woman. I have seen women on the accelorated protocol for only 30 days and get full supplies.
Then woman on it for a full 9 months that only get a few ounces a day. It really depends on the woman.

ACK! I LIKE to put things on the calendar, LOL! I'm trying to get something -- anything -- nailed down. Oh well. At least I've got the diapers taken care of!

I'll get the lact-aid, the herbs, the bottles, and the formula ready, so no matter what, I'll be able to feed the baby! The good news is that I'm about 1 1/2 weeks into the regular protocol, and I can already tell I'm getting some breast changes. I am hoping that because I bf my bio dd for a good loooooooong time, my body will remember what it is supposed to do. laugh

Thanks so much!
