I have been using a temporary sns with my daughter for 5 months. When she is fussy while nursing I use the sns to give her frozen milk.

Yesterday I tried the lactaid for the first time. It was easier to use, but she got a lot more milk a lot faster.

Coincidentally I weighed her yesterday and found she only gained 2 ounces in 12 days. She normally gains 4 ounces a week. She is just now starting to turn over so it's not like she's being much more active.

I'm uncertain if I should use the tsns and just give her extra milk even when she's not fussing or if I should use the lactaid. I want her to stimulate me as much as possible for as much fresh milk as possible. Partly because fresh is better but also partly because I have limited amounts of donated milk. I also want her to gain appropriate weight and will give her formula if I have to once the frozen milk is gone.

What do you think?

The lower you put the Lact-aid the harder they have to work for milk. Are you starting off with the lact-aid or adding when she gets fussy. I would continue with the lact-aid for a few weeks and see how she does. As long as she is gaining and is satisfied then she is fine. I would think at 5 months you could quit weighing weekly. She seems to be doing fine I would weigh her every two weeks if you feel you must weigh her and then stretch it out to monthly.

I wait until she gets fussy then add the supplementer.

Today I used the lactaid and she hasn't taken all that much extra milk. I nurse her, she gets fussy, I add the lactaid, she nurses until she stops.

Yesterday she probably took 8 ounces out of the lactaid. Today maybe 2 or 3 so far and it's already 6 pm. She won't take that much more before going to bed.

One of the things that occurred to me is that she has been waking up a lot at night to nurse and she has not been satisfied to nurse in a sidelying position. She wants me to sit up because I think she gets better flow. I do not need a supplementer at night. Last night she only got up a couple times and I didn't need to sit up. I think I will observe the frequency of night feeds to see if she seems to be getting enough during the day.

So based on how things went today, I am okay using the lactaid. I think I'll still get enough stimulation with the way I'm using it.

Thanks for your thoughts.

The other thing is that even bio babies have days when they nurse more or are more fussy.
I think the important thing is that you try to avoid using the Lact Aid at every feeding and allow the baby to nurse without it. Also don't let the milk flow from it immediately.
As far as nursing lying down making a difference; many babies have their favorite positions and maybe she just doesn't like nursing in that one.

My daughter in law mentioned that nursing while laying down sometimes has a lesser flow because those particular milk ducts aren't stimulated during the day ( if you are nursing sitting up)
It was suggested that you nursing laying down 1 during the day to stimulate those ducts and get maximum production at night.

When I BF my bio children, this was never an issue but with my adopted daughter, it made a difference which position

Just a thought or 2
