My husband and I are set to adopt a baby with a due date of May 29th 2009. I started pumping about 2 weeks ago. I am getting some discolored liquid out of both breasts. It has started to clear some. Not enough to measure. I am using Dom. but did not go the birth control route. Anybody else out there experience "rusty pipes" when they started pumping? I pump every three hours and once at night. I ordered some of the herbs--Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek seed. Should get here tomorrow.

Lisa it is totally normal to get the "rusty pipes" when you first start pumping. Do you have a lact-aid? I did herbs and a lact-aid in the beginning and produced about 1/3 of my daughters needs. I later went on the protocol and quit supplementing smile
Congrats on the upcoming adoption.

Thanks for the response. I have a SNS to use when the baby comes. I am taking domperidome 20mg 4X a day and now will add in the herbs. You did the protocol with the BCP after you had the baby? I am just not sure I want to use the birth control pills. Had bad experiences with them when I was younger. I had actual milk come out of the left breast today. Very exciting. Really hoping the herbs will help increase lactation.

I did do it when Rebekah was close to a year. She had cows milk issues so the more mommy milk I could give her the better. I just went on it for 42 days and then stopped the bcp and pumped as well as nursed her. I was taking Dom and herbs. I had my concerns about the bcp too but it was for such a short time I was okay with it.
That is really good to hear that you have milk already.

Milk went into the bottle today. It was probably 2 teaspoons out of the left and 1 1/2 teaspoons out of the right.

I would like to build up my production and after reading a few more boards and chatting I am considering BCP.

Maybe someone could help by answering a few questions:

If I start the BCP, do I stop the herbs and pumping until the baby is born? I read somewhere on here not to pump while in the BCP phase.

It is a direct placement, So we will bring Josiah home from the hospital. I have an SNS and a very kind member here is mailing me a lact aid. I also have another friend who is supplying me with breast milk to supplement. Once he is here, do I bf him while still taking the BCP? At what point should I stop the BCP?

Lisa you do stop the herbs and pumping while taking the bcp and dom. You will nurse him with the lact-aid and stop the bcp after a full 30-60 days on it. You decide how long to do the accelerated protocol. I think I did it for 42 days.

You are very welcome and it is fine. A lot of Questions and answers get repeated here. No one minds answering a question if it helps someone else. smile

Ok after deciding to try the BCP, dealing with my OB/GYN to get them (I thought they loved to hand BCPs out--every time I go they ask if I want them--this time it was like pulling teeth.) I am picking them up from the drug store today.

Just to make sure as to what to do-- I need to go ahead and start with an active pill no matter where I am in my cycle right?

The birhtmother is due next Friday, so I do not have a lot of time before the baby arrives.

Once I start the BCP and continue with the dom, I stop pumping and taking the herbs. When the baby arrives, I bf him using the lact aid. I know that Laurie has answered my question like 5 times. Please excuse my OCD on this. I just want to make sure that I am doing all I can to help this process along.

Thanks so much for your time and patience.

Lisa,
That is right. Active pills only for 30+ days. You will also be taking the domperidone 20 mg 4 times a day. You stop pumping or taking herbs. When you have seen some breast changes (30+ days) you stop the BCP's and start pumping and add in herbs.
