I'm just wondering if it is possible to stop Dom and continue breastfeeding after inducing lactation? I'm currently taking Dom 4x 3 per day and would love to stop as I seem to continue to gain weight even though I'm eating healthy and exercising and I'm getting concerned.
I've been breastfeeding since the begining of May and did the long protocol to prep.

I know you can wean off the dom and I bet it's different for everyone as far as maintaining your milk supply. I would do it very slowly and gradually and be prepared to start again if your supply suffers. Also, I just read an article on this site that suggests that the breasts respond to high blood levels of prolactin when the breasts are empty, so I infer that it is good to take the Dom/herbs while I am pumping so that by the time the meds kick in I have empty breats ready to respond to the higher prolactin levels. MORE MILK! Hope it works.

I e-mailed Dr. Newman about this and he didn't recommend weaning off the domperidone until the baby was at least a year old and solidly eating solid foods. He said even then, you might not totally wean off of it. He said it is different than bf a bio baby.

I stayed on some dom until I weaned my daughter at 18 months.

Jen I'm glad you posted that!! I was under the impression that it is sometimes possible to wean off the Dom. Good to know Dr. Newman actually recommends continuing it the whole time.

I have heard of people that have, but most it is when the baby is older and taking more. Some people will be the exception and will be able to wean off earlier.
