Long time reader first time poster (lol always wanted to say that).

I'm on week 6 of the regular protocol & wanted to know what the difference is between a hospital grade pump and say, a $300 pump you can buy.

I spoke w/ a lactation consultant and she suggested renting a hospital grade pump, but I see here on the forums, that most have sucess w/ a regular pump (like Medela PIS). I'd like to purchase one rather then rent, but what the heck is difference?

A hospital grade is generally stronger and it is meant to be used by more than one person, so it is a contained system and no "germs" go into it. It also has a motor that will last longer.

I used a PJ's Limerick (which is what Lenore recommended) and that is nice because it is rated multiple user so you can buy it used and feel safe using it with new supplies.
I also used a Medela PIS. I bought it used from a friend.

I liked them both and alternated between them.

Thanks for responding so quickly!

I'm glad to hear a hospital grade pump isn't necessary. I'll probably purchase the Pump in Style as it's much cheaper then renting for months on end!

Pammy,

I live in Boulder, CO and have a PJ limerick that I am looking to sell. It was bought new in February 2010 and I used it for about 7 weeks after doing the protocol before our surrogate delivered our son a little early. It includes 2 sets of flanges and bottles and a battery pack for pumping away from home. I loved this pump it was much better than Pump in Style Advanced I used with my first child. I am asking $200 for it(if you pick it up to save shipping) which would be comparable to a Pump in Style.

Let me know if you are interested!
