Is rubbing breast milk the best cure for cracked, bleeding nipples? I remember vaguely doing that when I nursed my son five years ago. During my AM pump today I noticed some blood in one of the breastshields and sure enough, one nipple is cracked and bleeding. Not tremendously, but now I am making pink drops. How fun! Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would definately check the size of your horns! If your nipples are rubbing that much, they could be too small. I got larger ones after a week or so and my soreness disappeared and my milk increased rapidly.

Lanisoh lanolin ointment also really helps.

Good luck!!

owie, owie, owie! I am so sorry! You know, I've read that Lactation consultants have gotten fooled when checking pump horn size because some women's nipples start out fitting the horns well but after 5 min or so of pumping get bigger, so big that they are too big for the horns despite what they looked like at the start of the pump session....just a thought. If your nipples are bleeding, something is not right....

tell me your using the low suction! One of the ways to get that crack to heal is to let your nipples air dry.. try to run around with your flaps down.Keep that suction down....

Oh yes, I am definitely on low suction! There was really no pain associated with it and not too much blood. Just enough to turn things a bit pink. And the second round of 7 minutes, there was none. So, who knows what's going on.
I have been air drying as much as possible but I think I will try that ointment as well.
Thanks!
