I am very happy to announce that our daughter, Molly, arrived yesturday, two weeks early. All are doing super and my nursing is going great. Everyone, and I mean everyone at the hospital were blown away at me producing milk and nursing her. It was funny to have so many nurses and doctors come ask me how I did it and what medication I was taking. At the point when we went to the hospital I was experiencing what I think was a clogged duct, yet I continued to pump in the hospital, and with doing this and then having Molly nurse within 45 minutes of her birth, it feels much better. Thanks DawnL for you suggestions. Molly nursed beautifully right from the start and has continued to do so, when I can get her to stay awake that is.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my amazing news with you all and ask a quick question. How often and for what duration should I pump after feedings? Every one? How long will I have to pump after feedings?

Many thanks,

Congrats! You must be elated having a new daughter and being able to nurse her. Our baby is due in about 4 weeks, and I am so anxious to have the bond I will share with him through nursing. Once again, CONGRATS!

Hi,
Pumping the opposite breast while nursing will help to build your supply. You can pump after also, but I think her nursing and you pumping the other breast should be enough to help your supply build. Are you using the Lact-aid or SNS?
I love the name Molly, I have a neice named Mollie. Contrat's with the nursing going so well , get as much rest as you can, let other folks do the cooking and housework! Take care, Cathy

Hey Kellie,

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

You didn't mention how much milk you are producing. It may not be necessary to pump after feeds at all. We usually recommend breastfeed from each breast at least twice and then double pumping for about 10 min after feeds. This way your baby will have the benefit of "switch nursing". Bottle feeding moms tend to feed there babies in one position on one side which is not the most beneficial for hand eye co-ordination later on. By switch nursing you're already giving your baby this benefit. If your supply is below 17 oz in 24 hours we suggest double pumping after feeds for about 10 min.

Fondly,

At the time of her birth, I was pumping about 5oz. a day. When I took her in for her weight check 3 days later, she only went from 6.2 down to 5.10. Not too bad. From that I was assuming she was getting enough. The doctor said she was a bit jaundice and to boost her food intake. That is when i introduced the LactAid and she is doing really well. Her coloring is almost back to normal. I have not been real religious about pumping after each feeding. How long should I use the LactAid? And pumping after feedings?
Thanks all for your congrats and input. Despite lack of sleep, I am loving being able to nurse Molly, a lot due to the help and encouragement I have received from all of you.
