Hi
We have a situation where my mother in law was recently (2 wks ago) diagnosed with terminal cancer. We are currently travelling 300 miles every weekend to be with her. I am due to start pumping in a week or so and I am unsure what to do. We stay with her and there are several family members living in the household and NO privacy. How do I do this? Should I wait to start pumping since there is no for sure baby yet, or can I get by with only pumping once or twice during the weekend? I don't want to do anything that will jepordize my possible future milk supply. I appreciate any ideas.

Joni, you may want to wait to pump and just stay on the protocol. But...at some point you will need to pump and this may still be your situation. I would just explain to the family that you will be inducing lactation for the baby you plan to adopt. Surely you can get 15-20 minutes privacy to pump somewhere. Look into getting a nursing shwll and use that while you pump in case someone walks in to wherever you are. At least that way you are covered. Only pumping 1 or 2 times on the weekend will not be beneficial to you bringing in a milk supply. Another thought is to use the car adapter and pump in your vehicle. Keep a cooler in the car for the milk or if you are somewhere that you can use a fridge you could put the milk there. Where there is a will there is a way. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Great ideas, Lalle. Joni, I have a similar situation as my folks live with us half of the year and my Dad always seemed to be around when I needed to pump (they're gone at the moment). So I bought a free standing three panel screen at Cost Plus Imports for $99 ... that way, I didn't have to get out of my chair or move the pump around and was more likely to get my pumpings in. I just pulled the screen around me. Likewise, I pulled the screen around me if I was using the SNS or Lactaid while nursing as I was a tad shy about constantly flashing my boobies to visitors, plumber, other visiting family .... and could just feed baby or pump according to my schedule ... not anyone elses. Perhaps you already have a screen like this. I also thought of hanging a curtain near my chair, but the screen was easier to put up and no holes to patch on the wall for take down time. I chose a screen that I thought I would use in the house somewhere else later on.

I'll keep your mother-in-law in my thoughts and prayers. Hang in there ... your baby and milk will come.

Aloha,
Christina
