Hello again,

I have been absent for a while - we are in Germany now- it was a very long trip from Manila with the little one, but everything went well. It is great to be home and grandparents are delighted with little Emma.

Frankly I am exhausted, though as my little daughter seems to want to nurse pretty much constantly. I am feeding her on demand with the help of a lact-aid. Last night this meant at least every hour and I am not sure how long I can keep this up. Is this normal?? I thought she might be a little jet-lagged but we have been here for 10 days now and it seems to be getting worse rather than better.

Any thoughts?

Hey Yasta and LD, congratulations! So glad to hear your pumping is going well.

Love,
Chris

Yes, that is probably normal for Emma. Remember that every baby is different so there really isn't any "normal". She may be nursing for comfort some of those times. How much milk is she taking in daily? Is it all breast milk or formula too? Do you try to nurse her without the lactaid? You may want to try nursing her at night with out the lactaid (not every feeding) and learn to do it lying down. That way you will be able to get the sleep you need and she will have the comfort she is looking for. That is assuming she is nursing often at night and is just wanting the closeness. How big is she? My 2nd son was big and he nursed every 45 minutes to 2 hours from birth. At night it was about every 3 hours. It does slow down after awhile. How old is Emma? Maybe she has hit her first growth spurt.

Hi Chris,

Glad you are back. I am increasing! Especially if I pump 5 times a day. I leave next Sat. on 7/31/04

Chris,

Where is she sleeping? How much longer until you go home?

Hello,

Emma actually slept beautifully last night, only woke up twice, go figure...

She is five weeks old and drinks about 20 ozs formula from the lact-aid plus whatever she gets from my breasts. She sleeps mostly in my husband's bed at the moment. (Unfortunately co-sleeping with me is dangerous even for able-bodied adults)

Love,
Chris

Glad to hear she slept a little better. Maybe you could look into getting an Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper? That way she could be safe but by your side. It would be easier to tend to her and get back to sleep during the night.

Keep up the good work!

Aloha,
Christina
