My PIS Advanced seemed to be leaking air and the little yellow hole plug for double pumping would always pop out making me have to hold the cups with one arm if I wasn't using my bra so the other arm would be free to hold the yellow thingie in. So I called Medela and they replaced the face plate and yellow plug, and after that didn't solve the leaking air problem, they replaceed the pump entirely ... sent it to me FedEx. I was impressed by that.

I asked if they would replace my Advanced with an Original and they did ... so I am going to go try it for the first time right now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> Can anyone tell me what is the setting for optimal pumping on the Original? I remember seeing it posted a while back. This would be helpful. The customer service rep was surprised I wanted the Original over the Advanced.

They also replaced the bottle portion of my SNS that got some cracks inside the neck area (maybe from boiling water?) ... FedExed that one, too.

Pretty good, especially seeing I am still waiting for the replacement parts from Britax for the carseats that were recalled, and Britax said they would FedEx it last Monday! Oi.

I'm still trying to remember the setting ... was it speed at 5 and suction at 3 or vice verse? Anyone?

Christina I don't remember the exact setting. But I do remember you should not be over the middle suction power so what ever that is . Speed I always flutuated so what ever you are comfortable with at this point until you get a better answer.

It's best not to go past medium suction and you can start out at a faster speed and then slow. Everyone is different in terms of what speed works best for them. Too much suction can cause nipple damage. I use speed 3 and suction medium. Some ladies use speed 4 or 5 to start and then about a minute later reduce to speed 3. A newborn speed sucks to get a let down. My son speed sucks for about 30 seconds and then slows when the milk lets down. He's 10 months old now.

Thanks for the replies ... and YIKES! I've been using high speed and high suction (more so with the Advanced) as it seems like I could get as much milk with the lower speeds. I will certainly try adjusting to these suggested speeds. Hope I don't already have damage .... especially from using the hospital grade Ameda's for so long.

Well, I pumped today on the suggested speeds and got a little less ... hmmm. Also, when I use the lower suction setting, it sounds like air is escaping ... is it supposed to be like that?

I think there may be a difference between pumping before the arrival of the baby when your nipples are much more sensitive and once you have been nursing a baby for some time. I pretty much stopped pumping shortly after our baby was born and have just started again as I will be going back to work soon, and it does feel very different. I barely notice the suction. If you haven't felt any discomfort with the high speed / suction I would just continue.
