I know with the protocol you don't start pumping till you are finished the BCp.. but I have very sensitive nipples. Is pumping earlier a good idea to get used to the sensation?

No it is really important that you do not pump until you are finished with the bcp. Then start pumping, there are some creams that you can purchase that are very helpful. I've been pumping for 3 weeks and i do remember what it was like.. (wanting to get things started) But the longer your on the bcp the better. Good luck

Catlady, nipple prep is a good idea but don't use the pump for that. Like stated you really need to wait to pump and follow the protocol as recommended. You can "rough" up your nipples with a wash cloth in the shower or even one of those shower scrunchies as you get used to the wash cloth.

So why is it that stimulating with the pump is bad? Just curious!

With roughing up you are stimulating the outer skin only. With the pump you are stimulating the milk making apparatus. You don't want to do that until it is time in the protocol to pump. If you pump too early you can actually hurt your production.
Oh on the toughing up you can also go without a bra and the friction of your shirt fabric against your nipples will help.

Hi Ladies,

It used to be that we recommended nipple preparation for breastfeeding and pumping but we now know that this is not necessary. When latching your baby, his/her mouth goes PAST the nipple, and well and truly onto the breast. The same goes for the pump. Your nipple will elongate and form a teat which involves some breast tissue as well. The nipples themselves should be well centered in the pumping attachments, not touching the sides. And you should be fine.

Don't worry honey, I have Raynaud's syndrome which makes my nipples VERY sensitive, and breastfeeding and pumping are a breeze for me.

Warmest regards,
