I was wondering if adding Goat's Rue to my other pills will help to increase milk supply. I am currently taking domperidone, brewer's yeast, prenatal vitamins and a calcium pill.

My son was born Jan 14, 2005 over 9 weeks early. My milk supply was very weak to begin with and I had ALOT of trouble trying to get something established. The doctor mentioned that it was possible that due to how early he was, that my mammary tissue was not ready to BF and that's the reason for low supply. I was on reglan and that did help but I was concerned with the number of side effects and opted for the Domperidone. As I said.....it did help some but I wanted to try to increase it even more. Would goat's rue be a viable option and also...this is a little embarrassing......I have always been well endowed.....my understanding is that goat's rue is supposed to help with mammary tissue..........does it cause an increase in bust size????? Not really looking for that side effect

Thanks in advance for any advice that you can give.

P.S. I am also interested in purchasing some dom if anyone has some leftovers not in use. Thanks!!!!

Goats Rue does help in mammary tissue growth. The other herbs that are helpful for milk production are Blessed Thistle and Fenugreek. Look at the protocols on the main page and it will give you the dosages of herbs. I also took Alfalfa when I induced lactaition and I think that helped as well.
How often are you nursing your son and for how long? Have you seen a Board Cert. lactation consultant to have your latch checked? That is one of the main causes of diminished supply.

I have seen a lactation consultant during the 6 weeks he was in the NICU......i have tried blessed thistle.....fenugreek (no change) and am currently trying milk thistle as well.

I am going to try to add more protein into the diet and a little less carbs. Any other remedies or ideas??? Any others with thoughts on goat's rue????

Thanks again!!!

only to nurse him more often and as long as he will nurse. You know the whole supply and demand thing.
Are you having to supplement at this point?
If so I would give any and all supplement via the lact-aid. That way he is still stimulating milk production while receiving supplement.

Dear Candi,

My son Adam was also born quite early, 8 week and spent just about that long in the NICU. I induced lactation. You're much farther ahead having had a pregnancy. If you can pump after feeds it will help. I know that's a lot to ask but the most important thing you can do to increase your milk supply is frequent draining of your breasts.

Lots of skin to skin will help both you and your baby. This is known as "Kangarroo Care" and is especially good for preemie development.

What dosage of domperidone are you taking? The dosage for moms in your situation is about 20 mg 4 times per day. You can find domperidone at www.globaldrug.tv but be sure to let your doctor know what you're doing so you can be monitored and educate at the same time

Drinking water to thirst will help and I have to say, I was never sure about oatmeal until this week when my son Ethan went on another nursing strike. I had oatmeal quite a few times and my supply ZOOMED! So give it a try. Doesn't matter which one. I also find that maple syrup helps. So how about oatmeal with maple syrup? Sound good? Give it a try and report back ok?

Hang in there honey. Before you know it your little one will be running around smearing peanut butter on the walls and unravelling the toilet paper rolls....

Warmest regards,

I have found Goat's Rue in 2 forms, liquid and pill form. Is one preffered over the other? I am a B cup now, so some extra growth would be a plus. Also, I have not started the protocol yet and would it be better to use the Goat's Rue before the protocol or take it while on the protocol. Any suggestions?

You can do this!!! I had a pretty bad supply problem when ds was born 4 months ago, but now we're doing great. I still take an herbal supplement called More Milk Special Blend made by Motherlove (www.motherlove.com). It contains More Milk Plus (fenugreek, blessed thistle and a few more herbs) along with Goat's Rue.

I think the Goat's Rue made all the difference to me, because More Milk Plus itself wasn't helping me. I think Motherlove is discontinuing the Special Blend, but they are going to have Goat's Rue capsules that can be taken with More Milk Plus (which comes in capsules and drops but might only be in capsules by now).

Good luck!

Cathy
