I recently ahd octuplets. Although I actually was pregnant with them, I am finding it difficult to breast feed all of them. I feel my nipples run dry after four or five of them drink. Should I take the hormones to increase milk production?

You are trying to breastfeed 8 babies at once? You're my hero!

Domperidone can help in this situation. Please discuss the idea with your doctor. The starting dose our doctor's prescribe for mothers of multiples is 10 mg 4 times per day for the first week and then increase to 20 mg 4 times per day.

You'll need to put the babies on a rotating schedule where you breastfeed two at a time, 4 times. So Baby 1 and 2 would be first, then 3 and 4, then 5 and 6 and finally 7 and 8.

On the next feeding you would feed 7 and 8 first, then 5 and 6, then 3 and 4, then 1 and 2.

On the next feeding you would feed 5 and 6 first, then 3 and 4 , then 1 and 2, then 7 and 8.

and so on so that each baby has the opportunity to be first at least once a day.

If you need to supplement, it's best to do so at the breast. So toward the end of the feeding if you feel that the 4th or 5th baby many not be getting enough to eat, that's the time to add the supplementary feeding tube device www.lact-aid.com

Besides the media frenzy that would ensue if someone actually had 8 live babies, they couldn't be more than a pound each and breastfeeding wouldn't be possible for at least several weeks anyway.

Wow.....and I am worried about having twins in that are due to arrive on April 11. I commend you. I am hoping to be able breastfeed both of my twins without supplimenting.

HopeD-- I am breastfeeding myadopted triplets without supplementation. (I told the story in "Mediacal INterventions to Induce Lactation/Increase Milk Supply" forum.) If I can do it, I know a bio mom of twins can! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Anon-- I commend you for attempting to breastfeed all eight babies. I know sometimes I feel that all I do is breastfeed. I know that sometimes I become so stressed and feel that I just can't take any more right now. DUring those times I give my hubby permission to feed one with a bottle. This takes enormous pressure off of me. Just knowing that I don't have to provide every little bit of what my babies need, especially since I am alone with them and my toddler 12 hours a day every day, and rarely get a break. I truly beleive that giving myself permission to skip feeding one of them once in awhile has actually allowed me to be so successful. I think thta the mental stress (not physical) of nursing all the babies all the time would be, for me, too much, and I may have stopped breastfeeding altogether if I didn't allow myself this small concession. And supplementing this way once in a while has no negative affect on my milk supply.
