I am beginning the regular protocol and have a while before I begin pumping, but I always thought a hospital grade Medela pump would be best. I have seen a pump by Limerick listed a few times. How does this compare with the Medela Lactina? Does anyone know? Thank you. Kristin

The Limerick has been recommended by Lenore. Both she and Nona were testing them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I would not rent a pump. We used to have people buy the PIS from MEdela and it is a good pump. The Limerick I have heard is nicer, but I haven't used it.

I had rented the medela from a hospital before I found this board. After talking to Lenore and talking to someone from Limerick I am going to buy the Limerick!

The PIS is great. It is what we have been recommending for years and is still a wonderful pump. The Limerick is new. So if you are buying a pump it is a good choice to have. The cost is excellent and the results are wonderful. It is much closer to how an actual baby nurses and one of the nice things is it can be resold when you are done with it. I have heard it is an easier pump to let down with.

Here's the scoop. I personally tested the new Limerick Pj Junior and found it to be easier to let down to than the PIS. With the PIS it took me about 15 minutes to let-down. With the Limerick it took about 2 minutes and I had multiple let downs. I noticed that my milk supply increased rapidly as well with the Limerick.

As many of you know, I'm currently studying for my doctorate which required time away from my still-breastfeeding son. While travelling to doctoral seminars or conferences, I brought my PIS because it has a battery pack option, and pumped everywhere....on planes, in restaurants and in class (with advanced permission). Although I was diligent, my milk supply would suffer partly due to my schedule and partly due to the stress of presenting doctoral products and so on. By the time I would get home, I would be in a bit of trouble, even with Ethan back at the breast. As soon as I started pumping with the Limerick, ZOOM my milk supply would shoot up again within a couple of days.

I started travelling with the Limerick and a long extension chord and my milk supply remained constant, no more dips.

What is great about this pump is that it has flexible breast shields that compress the nipple/areola while suction is applied thereby producing both positive and negative pressure to the breast, much like a baby does.

The price is right too, and the pump has a built-in timer so you don't have to watch the clock which is also nice because when you start breastfeeding, you don't want to be watching the clock either.

And it's rated as a multiple user pump so you can re-sell it later, all the person needs to do is purchase their own breast shields and tubing. There is a filter that prevents backflow of milk into the pump and it has a three pronged plug ie: it's hospital grade!

The contact for the Limerick is joan.ortiz@limerickinc.com Note that I do not receive any renumeration from this company and I purchased the pump I tested. Their service is wonderful as well.

So there you have it. My first choice is the Limerick and my second choice is the PIS. But both will do the job.

Best,
