I just had a quick question. My baby is so fussy and the doctor said she has reflux so yesterday she started zantac. I worry all the time that I am eating something to bother her. I am even starting to wonder if she would be better on formula, does anyone know if this may help? She loves nursing and is doing so great but i don't want her tummy to hurt and I don't want her to be fussy. Please let me know any thoughts/suggestions...

She will most definitely not do better on formula. Formula is much harder on the digestive system than breastmilk. Most likely it isn't something you are eating that is causing this, if it is reflux. Hang in there you are giving your baby the best food for her.

My Ped told me that all babies hace reflux, some just more than others. For a really good perspective on tummy disorders in infants read THe Happiest Baby on the Block . I love that book! It totally altered my opinion on swaddling, and helped me live through the colic phase with triplets!

Hey Beener,

Remember, formula is an over-the-counter medication that is concocted by a pharmaceutical company so how can it be better than breastmilk which is natural? What you can do is try to eliminate dairy from your diet and see if that helps. Note that most formula is dairy based and the bovine protein is often the culprit when it comes to infant food allergy.

The zantac should help too.

I have stopped all dairy and she started the Zantac on Tuesday ngiht, since Wednesday we have a different baby, she is so happy and the horrible crying has stopped, even my nursing is a whole new experience, she is doing great. Thank you all for the advice, i did not want to stop nursing, I was just at the end of my rope with her tummy! Oh and I love the Happiest baby on the Block book, thanks!
