I have a problem: Both my DH and my dr are against my taking the Dom.
My DH read all the info about the dom, and then went on line, and found negatives. He is against my taking it, and doesn't want me to use it if I breastfeed my milk, as he isn't comfortable taking the slightest chance of any issues with either the baby or myself.
Also, I was able to get the bcps from my doc, but no Dom - she's not comfortable rx'g it. So that's two people who don't want me to take the Dom.
How can I stimulate milk production? I am taking the bcps right now... and was thinking I could stop 6 weeks out, and start the herbs and oatmeal. Please advise!
Thanks
Robin

Here is my doc's response to my question about using dom:
"When I have tried to induce lactation in the past, I?ve used the metoclopromide. I would be hesitant to use something not FDA approved and compounded individually. As for the depression, as both drugs (metoclopromide + domperidone) appear to have a similar mode of action, I?m not sure why one would cause more depression than the other. One thing you might do is to speak with a lactation consultant as they may have experience with this as well. "

First off... Domperidone does NOT cause depression. The only reason why our goverment does not allow the Domperidone to be manufactured her is because they have Reglan. The cost to make it is cheaper. And the goverment does not see any reason to start producing the domperidone. In other countries its an over the counter thing. That should let you know its not dangerous. I have an irregular heartbeat. Nothing wrong with my heart... I even had a heart cath. Just irregular. I have been taking 120 mg of Domperidone. And I have been on this for 4 years. Why so long? I did almost 5 months of the protocol 4 years ago no maybe 5. I then started pumping. Pumped for almost 2 years. Then our daughter was born. I have NEVER had any problems with the Domperidone.

Thanks for the replies.
I have been diligently checking for answers to my concern about using the Domperidone, and luckily, I was able to speak to an IBCLC here in my home town. She was immediately supportive of my interest in using the domperidone, and gave me a SNS to "play with", so I can get used it.
She confirmed that many women use the dom without problems, and there are many pediatricians who are ok with mothers using it to help breastfeed their children. In other words, she was more than enthusiastic about the idea, but cautioned that she wasn't encouraging, just informing me that the use of dom is ok, as we have seen through all the literature here. She also recommended the pharmacy in Vanuatu, so I think I've got the ball rolling to help convince my DH that this might be ok.
I know I'm on the right track, because I felt much "better" after having spoken to this woman. I trust her advice, because I happen to work at the hospital where she works, and she would be more likely to discourage me, if she had any reservations.
She also pointed out that they give dom to mothers whose children are born prematurely, and are in the NICU, but they want to pump and store breast milk, but it's difficult for them due to stress and not having the baby at the breast.
So, I'll be discussing this with my DH tonight!

I know that the FDA doesn't "approve" the domperidone. The reasoning is because the main purpose of the dom is for nausea and tummy problems, and the US already has meds for that. But, the American Academy of Pediatrics approves the use of domperidone by breastfeeding moms. When it comes to my kids, I will trust the AAP over the FDA any day.
