A friend said that I should be careful what kind of breastmilk I use from the donated source - in other words the milk made at 6 mos post-birth is different than milk made at 1month, etc., and that I should not give my newborn breastmilk from a mom who has been pumping for six months - I can't believe that is true - is the milk that much different, and why wouldn't any age breastmilk be more suitable than formula? What would it do to the baby? I'm confused...

Any age breastmilk is better than formula. It will not hurt your baby at all. When you give birth and nurse your milk is uniquely suited to the stage your baby is at the time the milk is made. Th8is is what your friend is referencing, But breastmilk is best for baby no matter how old the baby is of the donor is. Take and use whatever donated milk you can get. As long as you trust the source. That would be like her saying that the milk you make isn't good for your baby. But studies side by side in the lab could not tell the difference between breastmilk from a mom who gave birth or one who induced lactation. There is no difference.

My son has received donated breastmilk, too. I think of it as SUCH a blessing! One of my BFFs had a daughter 2 months before Bretton was born. She pumped extra bags for us every once in awhile which was really nice! Then, my sister had a baby when Bretton was 8 months old. When she began pumping (when her son was about 4 weeks old) she would pump a bag for us and a bag for them every day. Her son never really would take a bottle, though, because he loves to nurse so much...so we have gotten most of his bags, too! My son drinks a bottle with her milk every single night. Before we got her milk, my sister worked with a mama that had only pumped (never really nursed ??? for some reason). She weaned her child from breastmilk (again ???) and gave us the breastmilk that was left in her freezer. I didn't know this mama but my sister knew her well and vouched for the safety of it. And, lastly, another of my really good friends just gave us about 50 ozs of her frozen milk. So when it is all said and done, my son will have had my breastmilk every single day of his life, two of my BFF milk, my sister's milk and a friend of my sister's milk. It's amazing and wonderful!

laugh If I could talk my mom into re-lactating, I'm sure she would donate to us, too!!! laugh
