It is 5 am Saturday morning and I can't sleep! We just learned yesterday morning that there is a baby boy who was born on Wednesday and, if all goes as planned, will be OUR son tonight!!!We went to visit him Friday night and he is adorable. He will probably not be coming home with us until Sunday at the earliest, as he is jaundiced and in an isolette with bili lights. I have not been permitted to breastfeed him (yet!) as the birthmother can not terminate her parental rights until Saturday PM.

I have been on the regular protocol since April. After getting the call yesterday morning, I skipped the BCP and started taking the herbs. I started pumping and, as we speak, there is MILK in the bottles! Since we didn't have much advanced notice, I'm just using my old Medela PIS. I'm not producing ounces or anything, but there is opaque milk that just barely covers the bottom of each bottle. I am thrilled!!! Other than pump, pump, pump, any words of wisdom for last minute preparation? Also, I have no experience with jaundice -- anyone know if the baby's jaundice will be any type of contraindication to breastfeeding right away?

Please cross your fingers or say a prayer that Matthew will be home with us soon!!!

What exciting news! You have a mother's heart already, I can tell. Fasten your seatbelt, it is going to get wild and fun!

Since you are so excited, here is a gentle reminder to drink lots and lots of water. That is what I tend to forget when I get busy.

Aren't you excited about the amount of milk you are getting already? I know the other ladies can give you more specifics, but I just wanted to chime in and congratulate you.

As far as the jaundice, I'm not an expert, but I can only say that breast milk is usually good for everything! When my babies were a bit jaundiced, during the mornings I would spread a clean blanket on the floor near a window which received the morning sun. I would take off their little shirt and diaper let them soak in some sun for a few minutes. They loved it, and of course I sat with them to enjoy the moment.

Matthew is blessed to have you be so concerned for him. Let us know how it goes.

Blessings, Kathleen

Olivia had what the doctor called breastmilk jaundice. Do exactly what the doctor says and it will be okay. When you get him home. Sit him in front of the window where he can get sunlight.. It will help his body metabolize the bilirubin.(SP?) Sunlight is great for that. Its the real light where as they use the artificial in the hospital... cause they can't stick the babies outside hee hee.

My advise to you is. Relax! Make sure your eating enough food and staying hydrated. Take your herbs and domperidone. Put him to the breast first without the lact-aid. Let him nurse off both breasts as long as he will before he gets frustrated. Then add the lact-aid. Try always putting him to the breast without the tube first. Try nursing him that way before he is to hungry and he gets mad. You don't want him dependant on that tube. He will also work you to a full supply so you can get rid of that tube.

Your doing fantastic! Milk covering the bottom of the bottle. Wow! In a week your going to be making ounces. smile

Thank you everyone! We just got the wonderful news that the birthmom has signed the paperwork and Matthew should be coming home with us tomorrow! I have been pumping, drinking lots of water and taking the dom and herbs. I haven't yet been able to put him to the breast -- without the adoption paperwork signed, the hospital wouldn't allow it. Can't wait to hopefully get him latched tomorrow and see how things go!!!

Yes please do update us. FWIW I didn't latch my daughter until we were out of the hospital. The nurses were nasty and I figured I didn't need the extra grief. She latched right on at 2 days old. Keep us posted smile

Matthew came home with us today! He is beautiful and so sweet. He is 5 days old today and has been bottlefed exclusively -- until now! As soon as we got him home I put him to the breast and he latched right on as if he'd been nursing for forever! He suckled on each side for about 10 minutes each. I don't know if he got much milk but he sure seemed to enjoy himself! He's nursed twice now and I'm SOOOO thrilled.

An SNS question for you experts: Was I supposed to follow the sterilizing instructions or the cleaning instructions before first use? Or both? And which parts? I did my best in my shell-shocked state to figure it out!

No you don't have to sterilize it just wash it with hot soapy water. If the SNS gets to much. I love the lact-aid. It gets more stimulation to your breasts. I am so happy for you! Congrats on the nursing. That is great that he nurses without the suplimenter for awhile.. you go girl! smile
